THẦY:

Thich Nhat Hanh (Thầy), is a Zen Buddhist monk who founded the Unified Buddhist Church in France in 1969, during the Vietnam War. A poet, scholar, and peace activist, he devotes his life to peace and reconciliation efforts. In 1967, Martin Luther King, Jr. nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Thay also founded the Van Hanh Buddhist University and the School for Youths of Social Services in Vietnam and has traveled the world, teaching “The Art of Mindful Living.”

In 1982, he founded Plum Village, a Buddhist community-in-exile in France, where he continues his work to alleviate the suffering of refugees, boat people, political prisoners, and hungry families in Vietnam and throughout the Third World. He has also received recognition for his work with American Vietnam veterans, meditation retreats, and his prolific writings on meditation, mindfulness, and peace. He has published some 85 titles of accessible poems, prose, and prayers, with more than 40 in English, including the best selling Peace Is Every Step; Being Peace; Touching Peace; and Living Buddha, Living Christ.

In September 2001, a few days after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, he addressed the issues of non-violence and forgiveness in a memorable speech at Riverside Church in New York City. In September 2003, he addressed members of the United States Congress, leading them through a two-day retreat.

PRACTICE:

Mindfulness is a state when the mind and the body become one (awakening). With mindfulness, the world becomes a better place to live. People understand one another better and, as a result, they love one another more. Practicing mindfulness includes mindful breathing, mindful eating, mindful hugging, mindful washing of dishes, mindful listening to a dharma talk, noble silence, sitting meditation, taking care of anger, tea meditation, walking meditation, working meditation, etc.

WELCOME:

The best way to maintain mindfulness energy is to continue to practice in a Sangha. Without practicing, our mindfulness energy will be soon faded away. The Mindfulness Practice Group of Kansas always opens the door to welcome people who wish to continue to practice. Our practice is non-secular, and we welcome people from all spiritual traditions. Because you are looking for peace, love, and happiness, may your heart be opened, so peace, love, and happiness can fill!
